29.07.2010 Continuing serious violations of raptors in BulgariaIn 2010 BSPB experts and volunteers found an increasing number of facts about continued plundering of nests of various birds of prey in many parts of the country. Recently a case with a robbed Imperial Eagle from its nest became public. Less known is a case of illegal attempt to export at Vidin’s custom two Bonelli’s Eagles with fake documents. Even fewer are those who know about the fact that British Customs catch Britain citizen living in Bulgaria, trying to import in UK eggs of Egyptian vulture plundering in Bulgaria. It seems this is only the "tip of the iceberg" of problems, although invisible, that seriously contribute to the dramatic situation of certain species of raptors in the country.
As is known, namely the plundering of nests is considered one of the main reasons for the Saker Falcon to be not only in the national but in the World Red Book too. Working on the conservation of this species under projects funded by the LIFE+ Programme of the EU and the BBC, many more worrying facts were collected. During the recent ongoing monitoring of the nesting areas BSPB experts have faced wooden stairs and Alpine ropes left on the rocks. Some of the pieces of evidence were founded in protected areas, which raises particular concern, because obviously the legal protection no matter for certain types of people.
BSPB has also evidences that the "total war" of pigeon lovers against the raptors continues. We faced some illegal practices as betting on racing pigeons and using of birds of prey for meals based on some atavistic beliefs. Obviously, there are enormous impacts on birds of prey because most terrifying factor for each species is the targeted violation.
As far back as 10 years ago BSPB provided all collected information for such violations to the National Police authorities, as it is known that in many cases, these nature offenses go hand in hand with other crimes.
